Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great project for Cub Scouts I used this product for my Tiger and Wolf Scouts 1st-2nd graders. It was easy for them with a little adult support to put the pieces together. We decorated them with markers and mushroom birds. Would recommend gluing to keep structure together as they handled them a lot. They loved it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fun craft. If you are looking for a simple project that can be used with individuals of age 4 or older, this is a great project. The assembly instructions are pictorial. There are no written instructions. However it should be noted that the item will only go together one way so you can't assemble it wrong. Grooves hold fast and fit together great. Recommendations, until assembled there is no way to identify the inside from the outside. I definitely recommend making it a 2 day project and painting or decorating both side of the pieces. Where the tabs and slots meet leaves overlap and you can see the unpainted side. Also, these are not meant to be used for actual birds. They are for decoration purposes. I suppose if you add a little hot glue or something it could be bird worthy but I just don't recommend it. I know that the ones that worked on this project were really excited by their birdhouses and loved making them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun project for kids Got these for my daughter‘s 9th birthday in her classroom to celebrate. We have always done an activity or project for birthdays as opposed to bringing in junk food and now that she’s in fourth grade the kids see us coming and are so excited because they know they get to do something fun! We only had 50 minutes of class time so my husband put them together ahead of time and they just decorated and painted them. They still did not have enough time to complete it because they were being very creative and having a lot of fun. Her teacher was going to allow them another 30 minutes the next day to finish them up. So allow at least 90 minutes if you are going to build and decorate if you’re just going to decorate and you don’t have a huge group of kids you could probably pull it off in about an hour we had 27 kids and only 3 adults so setting everything up just took a little bit longer I think. These are very cute and the kids were really excited about them it was a really good purchase! We also purchased jewels and googley eyes for the kids along with the Tempra paint for some bling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from mostly great purchase 6 and 7 years olds could put these together easily, yet some of the wood was rough, which thankfully did not result in splinters. The kids really loved them!

Do you recommend painting first or assembling them first?

Asked by: abgreene
If you paint them first, make sure to either use a non-water based paint, or spray a sealant so your hands don't end up colored. We built them first because I wanted them to see which end went up without my telling them.

What type of paint is recommended for use on the bird houses?

Asked by: abgreene
I used to paint those with acrylic paint, because I hang them outdoor. Acrylic paint is water resistant when dry, but don't expect the birdhouse to last forever outdoor. After all, they're for decorative only. Acrylic paint looks great on wood, too if you are keeping them indoor. I also let my children used tempera paint on those once because it's easier to clean up. Tempera paint is washable and I had to apply a layer of mod podge before I hang them outside. Still I think Acrylic paint looks better.

what size in the entrance hole?

I am wondering because I want a hole that is 1 inch or smaller. The bigger the hole, bigger birds can enter and destroy the nest of smaller birds.
Asked by: HeyBarb
The hole is only small enough for little birds. I highly recommend using wood glue if you plan on them being used by birds.
